Weaknesses Revealed

But he said to me

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

Scripture reading: 2 Corinthians chapter 12
Post by: Matt G

The current COVID-19 pandemic is revealing to people across the country and the world the true weakness of humanity. This is a fact that God fully understands but humans are quick to forget. The pandemic is showing people that we do not actually control our schedules, health, or future despite our technology and knowledge. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians chapter 12 that when God gave him a “thorn in his side” (an allusion to a hardship), Paul pleaded with God three times to take it away. God’s response to Paul was simply “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Our society seems to put an ever-increasing faith in the power of human intellect and emotion. The COVID-19 pandemic (a thorn in our sides) is an opportunity to remind ourselves how weak we truly are in comparison to how inconceivably strong our God actually is. Although we can’t determine our plans for this month, God knows how this pandemic will end and what His plans for our futures hold. We need to understand that only by relying solely on His grace and His faithfulness will we truly find the strength to wake up each day with confidence and hope. Chapter 12 finishes: “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” It is only when we acknowledge our natural weakness that we can be overcome by the true strength of our Savior’s goodness, provision, and grace.
