Searching For The Answers

It is better to take refuge in the Lord

than to trust in humans.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord

than to trust in princes.

Psalm 118 : 8 - 9 (NIV)

Lately, with all the chaos that has been around us, I have found myself with so many more questions than answers. I imagine I am not alone in this. I want all the information. I want clear-cut, detailed answers. I don’t want doubt or uncertainty. It seems to me at this time we are being fed a constant stream of changing, conflicting and fluid information. When discussing the latest updates with my husband, we always end up saying to each other “I just want to know...” and then pose one of our million infinite questions that we feel would solve all of our own problems and cure our fears and anxieties. We are constantly looking to the authorities and experts for information and answers which will provide us with the comfort and hope for which we are searching. One day I finally found myself saying to my husband, admittedly feeling a little frustrated, “They just don’t know that. No one does!”.

I felt with that retort, God was telling me in my heart to stop looking for comfort and hope in the answers this world provides, because they are not here. Our comfort and hope don’t come from answers provided by a president, a governor, an expert, or any news media outlet. They come from God’s Word. If we are searching for them in anyone else, we are not putting our faith and trust in Him, but in the world, which the Bible says, has harsh consequences (Jeremiah 17:5-6). I began thinking that God was using this time of uncertainty to further demonstrate to us (in particular, me) that we cannot and should not put our faith in humans or anything in this world, and we need to rely solely on Him for our hope, peace and strength.

That’s not to say that we should disregard authority, because the Bible says that God places people in these positions of power for a reason (Romans 13:1). We are to submit to authority, to the point that they directly go against our ultimate authority: God.

It is important to not bury your head in the sand, and to stay informed, but also to pray for and seek His wisdom. I urge you to not sit waiting for and hanging on every word in the next press conference. Hang on God’s word, immerse yourself in it. The answers our hearts desire are all there.
